Giving FAQ

  1. What is Worldwatch Institute’s tax ID number?

The Institute’s tax ID number is 23-7367468.

  2. Is my gift tax-deductable? If so, how do I get a copy of my tax receipt?

If you are a U.S. taxpayer, your gift to the Institute is tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. Once we have received and processed your contribution, you will receive an acknowledgement letter for your records that serves as your tax receipt.

  3. How do I make an anonymous gift?

We have the utmost respect for your privacy and want to make it easy for you to remain anonymous should you so choose. To make an anonymous gift, simply type “Anonymous donation" in the comments box before submitting your donation order.

  4. Who can I contact for information about my most recent gift? What about my giving history?

If you have any questions regarding your gift(s), please contact Grant Potter, Development Assistant, at (+1) 202.452.1999 x512 or via email at gpotter@worldwatch.org.

  5. How do I change my shipping or email addresses?

Please call us at (202) 745-8092 and kindly provide your name, your old address, and your new address, and we will update your contact information accordingly. Please be advised that changes to shipping addresses may take 30–45 days due to mailing schedules. Changes to email addresses will take effect within a few days.

  6. What is an employee matching gifts program?

Many employers will match your charitable contributions with an equal or higher amount if you are an employee, retiree, or board member of a company, or if your spouse is.

  7. How will I know if my employer will participate?

For your convenience, we have provided a list of U.S. corporations that offer matching gift programs. However, we suggest that you check with your personnel office as well, as this list is not exhaustive and many programs have been cut back recently due to financial constraints.

Worldwatch Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, an important qualification for many companies' matching gifts programs. Worldwatch’s Tax ID # is 23-7367468.

  8. How do I take advantage of matching gifts programs?

Generally, the personnel office of your company will provide you with a form to send along with your contribution. However, more and more corporations offer online matching gift processing.  And many companies offer donations via payroll deduction, enabling us to receive your donation and your employer’s matching gift in one lump sum. View a sample list of some companies that participate in matching programs here.

  9. How do I make a gift of stock or securities?

To make a gift of stock or securities, download this form and share with your stock broker.  To learn more about the tax advantages of doing so, please contact Grant Potter, at (+1) 202.452.1992 x512 or via email at gpotter@worldwatch.org.

  10. How can I reduce the amount of paper mail I get?

Worldwatch has adopted an institute-wide goal of reducing the amount of resources we use, and we encourage our supporters to take similar actions. One way to effectively reduce your paper mailings is by providing us with your email address. Simply send an email to Grant Potter, Development Assistant, at gpotter@worldwatch.org, and indicate that you wish to receive communications from Worldwatch via email only.

Gifts of Stock

Donating stock that has been held for more than one year can be a tax-effective way to make a gift to the Institute. U.S. taxpayers who itemize their deductions will usually be able to deduct the full market value of securities on the day they are transferred. You pay no capital gains, the tax deduction can be used toward your adjusted gross income and it can be carried over for use in a future tax year.
