Lisa Mastny - Senior Editor

Background:

Lisa is the editor of Worldwatch's annual paper and "environmental alert" book series as well as senior editor of the bi-monthly magazine World Watch. In addition, she is responsible for editing all of the Institute's online content, including the China Watch and Eye on Earth news services. Lisa served as a member of the Worldwatch research staff from 1998 through 2004, where she contributed her writing to State of the World, Vital Signs, and other Institute publications. She was also co-director of the 2004 project on "The Consumer Society" and helped conceive and compile the online consumer guide Good Stuff: A Behind-the-Scenes Guide to the Things We Buy.

Before coming to Worldwatch, Lisa served as an intern with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of International Activities, where she was involved with projects related to the EPA's environmental security initiative in the Middle East and Baltic states. She has also worked briefly at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Energy, and Environment in Germany and for Greenways/Zelene Stezky, an organization seeking to promote cultural preservation and sustainable tourism in the Czech Republic.

Lisa studied sustainable development and social ecology at Yale University, where she earned joint master's degrees in International Relations and Environmental Management. Her graduate thesis examined the need to incorporate considerations of a full range of social and economic values into the theory and practice of ecological restoration. Lisa holds a bachelor’s degree in International Studies from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Lisa enjoys exploring different cultures and has visited more than 35 countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Speaking Engagements: Lisa has spoken publicly at venues ranging from university classes to large conferences. Highlights include a presentation on international tourism at the annual State of the World conference in Aspen, Colorado; an appearance as guest lecturer on environmental crime at the Foreign Service Institute in Virginia; and a one-week guest speaking tour of New Zealand sponsored by the U.S. State Department.

Media Highlights: Lisa has given radio and television interviews to such outlets as National Public Radio, BBC News, Voice of America, U.N. Radio, and America’s Choice Network. Her work has been featured in a wide range of print and online media, including Foreign Policy magazine, National Defense, the International Herald Tribune, CNNfn, The Guardian (UK), Berliner Zeitung (Germany), El Pais (Spain), Dawn (Pakistan), and Veja (Brazil).
