Viktor Vovk is a Worldwatch senior fellow whose research deals with the challenge of sustainable development in the post-communist world. A native Ukrainian, he is deputy director at the Institute for Sustainable Development in Kyiv. He also serves as a consultant on sustainable development issues to the Ukrainian Parliament’s Committee on Environmental Policy and Natural Resource Use as well as to individual parliamentarians in other committees. Viktor has managed the publication of the Ukrainian edition of Worldwatch's State of the World 2000-2002 reports, Al Gore's Earth in the Balance, Herman Daly's Beyond Growth: The Economics of Sustainable Development, UN's Agenda 21 program, as well as other books. He is a Member of the Board of the National NGO "Ukraine: Agenda 21" and of the Civic Society Institute in Kyiv.
From 1988 to 1992 Viktor was an activist of the national-democratic movement of Ukraine. He is also a co-founder of the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine, for which he served as deputy chairman from 1990 to 1992. Viktor’s work with members of parliament began in 1992 when he co-organized a high-level international conference on the introduction of national currencies in the newly independent countries of the former Soviet Union.
Viktor has a Master’s degree in Physics from Moscow State University, and a Ph.D. from the Institute for Theoretical Physics of Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences. Prior to his engagement in public policy he conducted research in mathematical and theoretical physics and published in Soviet as well as international scientific journals.
Viktor has spoken to audiences at political meetings, NGO seminars, university classes, international conferences, and parliamentary events.
Viktor's work has been featured in various Ukrainian newspapers and magazines.
