LESTER BROWN TO LAUNCH NEW VENTURE

The Worldwatch Institute today announced that Lester R. Brown, its founder and Chairman, will establish a new organization, the Earth Policy Institute. Brown will continue his association with Worldwatch, as Chairman of the Board and as a Senior Fellow, contributing on an occasional basis to Worldwatch publications.

The principal focus of Earth Policy will be short articles for dissemination via the Internet and a forthcoming book on what an environmentally sustainable economy will look like. Worldwatch is meanwhile moving forward with plans to strengthen its stable of respected publications and solid relationships with environmental, business, and political leaders around the world. State of the World, the Institute's flagship book, is published in 34 languages.

Christopher Flavin, who succeeded Brown as President of Worldwatch last year, said, "Worldwatch and Earth Policy will cooperate in addressing issues such as biodiversity, climate change, water, and population. The rapid deterioration of the earth's ecological systems and the recent failure of environmental leadership in Washington signal the need for all of us to step up our efforts. We wish Lester great success in his exciting new venture."

This is one of several partnerships that Worldwatch is pursuing in order to increase its effectiveness in fostering a sustainable economy. The Earth Policy Institute will open an office in Washington around May 1 and will announce more details on its plans soon.
