Water For Life Decade: 2005 to 2015
In March, the United Nations launched a new decade long initiative to provide people with clean drinking water and basic sanitation—as called for by the Millennium Development Goals. Along with achieving this basic access, some of the additional challenges the UN hopes to address over the next ten years are improving access to water by women, providing enough water to preserve biodiversity, and increasing water efficiency of agriculture.

World Malaria Report 2005
In May, The World Health Organization and UNICEF launched the World Malaria Report 2005. This is the first comprehensive effort to assess the global impacts of malaria, which currently kills over one million people each year. While efforts need to be significantly ramped up, the report does find that progress has been made since 2000, with advanced prevention programs being implemented in many countries.

Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA)
The Arctic is extremely vulnerable to climate change and is now experiencing some of the most rapid and severe effects of climate change on earth—effects that are expected to worsen in the coming century if climate change isn't slowed. If left unaddressed, the Arctic effects of climate change will not only hurt Arctic communities and wildlife but will increase coastal flooding worldwide.
