Where We Will Live
Every year, another 60 million people—the equivalent of four Mexico Cities—are added to the world's urban population. With many of the world's megacities already in a state of crisis, the time has clearly come to address the mounting challenges of urbanization. In June, the Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements will convene in Istanbul, Turkey, to take up the urban agenda. Habitat II, as the conference is known, will move beyond the first Habitat conference, held in 1976, by focusing on the opportunities for tangible change. Organizers plan to publish a catalogue of "Global 100 Best Practices"—a set of proven strategies that could be used by urban planners or community groups anywhere in the world.
