A Pledge to Crack Down on Illegal Logging in Aceh
Speaking in Banda Aceh, Indonesia’s police chief Gen. Sutanto pledged to arrest illegal timber bosses in a bid to stop illicit logging. Indonesia’s annual rate of deforestation reached 3.5 million hectares in 2005, leading to widespread flooding and other environmental disasters. Aceh is among the worst-affected parts of the country.
It remains to be seen whether this pledge will be fulfilled. Among the challenges is the fact that certain police commanders and units continue to be involved in illegal timber ventures.
