Date for Aceh Elections Confirmed

Indonesian officials confirmed that elections will be held in Aceh province on December 11, the first time that voters will go to the polls since a 2005 peace deal ended 29 years of fighting between pro-independence guerrillas and government troops. Independent Election Commission head Muhammad Jafar said the balloting will be overseen by international monitors already in the province. The election date had been postponed repeatedly due to a slow political process in translating the provisions of the peace agreement into local law.
