Storm Death Toll in China May Be Considerably Higher Than Official Reports Suggest

When Typhoon Saomai hit China’s southeastern coast in early August, official reports said that 500,000 people had been evacuated and that a relatively small number, 17, died. Yet it appears that the actual number of deaths far surpasses the official tally. Reports suggest that about 900 fishing boats were lost and that some 2,000 people were killed in the worst-hit area.
