Standards for the voluntary offset market
Several standards are being developed for the voluntary carbon offset markets. Some strive to ensure that the projects have additional social and environmental benefits; these are often called “gourmet offsets” (an example is the Gold Standard). Others try to guarantee a minimum quality threshold, such as no double counting and basic additionality requirements. The most prevalent standards organizations are:
- Gold Standard (www.cdmgoldstandard.org)
- Voluntary Carbon Standard(www.v-c-s.org)
- Chicago Climate Exchange (www.chicagoclimatex.com)
- Climate, Community, Biodiversity Standard (www.climate-standards.org)
