A Climate Hero: An Outspoken Truth

by Ben Block on June 20, 2008

Worldwatch Institute is partnering with Grist to bring you this three-part series commemorating the 20-year anniversary of NASA scientist James Hansen's groundbreaking testimony on global climate change next week. Read parts one and two.

James HansenIn May 1989, a few months after NASA scientist James Hansen declared that global warming had arrived, he would provide another testimony to clarify the risks of future climate change.

But before Hansen could make his presentation to Senator Al Gore's subcommittee, the White House's Office of Management and Budget (OMB) intercepted the testimony and rewrote its conclusion. According to the revised copy, the cause of climate change was still unknown. NASA Headquarters said Hansen could accept the changes or not testify, he later recalled.

It was not the first OMB revision of a Hansen testimony. This time, he decided, would be different. Hansen notified Gore that his testimony did not reflect his actual opinion, which led Gore to frame the hearing's questions to reveal the OMB edits. It was the lead story on all major television networks that night.

Twenty years after Hansen's 1988 landmark testimony, the U.S. government remains largely in a state of denial about the urgency of global climate change. Yet Hansen remains a source of reason, despite government efforts to silence him and industry campaigns to obscure his research.

"Hansen has a real intense inner light," says Rafe Pomerance, president of Clean Air Cool Planet. "What's someone who sees the future to do? Keep his mouth shut? Hansen's not going to do that."

While Hansen espoused confidence about the science of climate change, few other scientists were willing to make such clear predictions. In its initial 1990 report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), composed of leading climate scientists from around the world, merely questioned whether anthropogenic climate change was occurring. Meanwhile, the coal, oil, and automotive industries unleashed a propaganda campaign to dispute the science of climate change.

The industry-funded Global Climate Coalition spent tens of millions of dollars to raise doubts about the evidence for climate change and to minimize the potential consequences. During the 1990s, the group managed to reshape media coverage of human-induced climate change from fact into theory by recruiting a handful of skeptical scientists who were paid to speak with the press and public. "It sowed confusion and doubt into the public that is now irremediable," says Spencer Weart, a climate change historian at the American Institute of Physics.

These efforts helped derail U.S. climate legislation in the 1990s and complicated efforts to negotiate the Kyoto Protocol, the international treaty that most industrial countries adopted to limit their greenhouse gas emissions. When George W. Bush became president in 2001, he quickly rejected the Kyoto Protocol and brought to a halt serious discussion of climate policy in the United States.

Hansen remained relatively quiet during those years and instead focused on his research. That quickly changed when he delivered a speech to the American Geophysical Union in December 2005. In addition to announcing that the year would prove to be the hottest on record, Hansen warned that the rise in sea levels was evidence that humans were causing global climate instability. "Jim took a step beyond that usual dissonance in the scientific community. He said ‘six to eight feet increase in sea level, I call that dangerous, don't you?'" says Rick Piltz, director of Climate Science Watch, a watchdog program of the Government Accountability Project.

The speech, which received widespread media attention, led White House-appointed NASA administrators to silence Hansen and other scientists. The White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), influenced by ExxonMobil lobbyists, singled out Clinton administration-appointed federal scientists who could be "removed from their positions of influence," according to a released memo. Among the "removed" scientists was former IPCC chair Robert Watson. American Petroleum Institute attorney Philip Cooney was appointed chief-of-staff of the CEQ. He would repeatedly edit government reports on climate change in an effort to lessen the certainty of the science.

At NASA, orders authorized by administration-appointed public relations officers "reduced, marginalized, or mischaracterized climate change science," an agency investigation stated recently. Climate scientists were not allowed to conduct media interviews without prior approval. Hansen had to remove the 2005 temperature data from NASA's website. Even Hansen's daily schedule suddenly required prior consent.

Hansen decided he had seen enough. He sent an e-mail in January 2006 about the NASA constraints to New York Times reporter Andrew Revkin, who first uncovered the restrictions. During an interview on the CBS program 60 Minutes, Hansen said, "In my more than three decades in the government I've never witnessed such restrictions on the ability of scientists to communicate with the public."

Federal scientists, from NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and other agencies, have since acknowledged that their climate findings were also being repressed. "[Hansen] did a great deal to help unmask the Bush administration's collusion with the global warming disinformation campaign," said Piltz, who helped expose the White House when he publicly resigned from the U.S. Climate Change Science Program. "He's a bit like a lone wolf. Nobody can tell him what to say or what to do. They made a mistake when they tried to mess with him."

Today Hansen rallies openly for drastic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. He writes personal letters to governors urging them not to approve new coal-fired power plants in their states. He decries the increased role of fossil fuel lobbyists in American politics - once testifying to Congress that NASA's mission had apparently become to "protect special interests' backside."

Above all, Hansen has continued to produce groundbreaking research. He and eight of the world's leading climate scientists will soon publish a paper arguing that total atmospheric greenhouse gases must be reduced to 350 parts per million - not 450, which many scientists have long stated - to avoid "irreversible catastrophic effects."

Over the past 20 years, supporters have lauded Hansen as a visionary scientist and a brave public servant. At a time when the United States has refused to act on climate change, Hansen has jolted the nation awake. Will the country - and its new leader - heed his advice? He says the world cannot wait another 20 years.

well, reading the quality of

well, reading the quality of the opposition to hansen's positions tends to raise my opinion of him.

You can tell a man's

You can tell a man's character by the kind of enemies he makes. The fossil fuel flunky crew and their minions are about as low as one can get.

Mr. Hansen should be given

Mr. Hansen should be given an award for his work. We need more scientist like this man. A man who cares for the planet and not big businesses and money. After all greed is the reason why so many people fight so hard to ignore global warming. It's crazy to think that the measured increase in greenhouse gases due to mankind burning fossil fuels is not having a negative effect on this planet. The planet warming is not a natural event, it's proven scientifically. It probably is too late anyways to reverse the effects since there is a lag time with pollution and warming.

Proven??? Really??? Please

Proven??? Really??? Please show me the proof. The planet warmed to a point warmer than we are today several times over. The earth warming and cooling is a natural event. The earth's temp has never been static. Of course, I doubt very much that what I write here will cause you to pause and think. I challenge you to look at the numbers yourself. Yes, it is true we had a warming period for 2 decades. This isn't out of the norm. Recently, the trend has reversed(since Jan 2007). While I allow that it is possible that ACO2 does effect the climate, I see that there is no proof. Further, many of the suggested solutions to the "possible" difficulty seem to be more disastrous to mankind than the problem itself. Already we have seen starvation of power and food to the weak parts of this world, due, in part, to the policies created to thwart AGW. Already, we have slowed man's progress in the underdeveloped parts of our world due to the policies created to thwart AGW. Given these recent observations and the recent observations of our temp trends, we should all proceed with extreme caution in regards to policies and laws set to prevent AGW, lest we have another corn fuel fiasco. Regards, James

you seem quite focused on

you seem quite focused on specific temperatures. it is undeniable that the planet has changed much over the years. it is also undeniable that too much change either way makes the earth uninhabitable by humans. we have never needed the planet to sustain an exponentially growing population, nor has anything ever globally consumed more resources than humans continue to do. if the earths resources were a milkshake, hypothetically speaking, and humans have the straw... let us not forget that biodiversity of the earth is paramount to human survival. do you know where we could perhaps get some more rainforests and oceans when we're done abusing these?

Unfortunetly this planet

Unfortunetly this planet cannot sustain every nation to be as wasteful as the U.S. If every nation in the world were as developed as the U.S. Europe and Asia than the oceans would be bare of fish, and most wild life would be gone. The food crisis is due to the world population being out of control. You see it's not just about global warming, it's about sustainablity.

When I read the buzz word

When I read the buzz word 'should' in his piece, I conclude that Dr. Hansen is trying to impose his moral code on his readers. But the nice thing about this country is that people are allowed to have their own beliefs. Even CEO's of fossil energy companies. One would have thought the idea of trying any person for their beliefs had died out with the Inquisition. What ever happened to "the marketplace of ideas" that intellectuals used to champion? Or has science become our sacred cow?

I have no doubt Mr. Hanson

I have no doubt Mr. Hanson is an a highly educated person, but, the premise of global warming is full of holes. Mr. Hanson is so absorbed in making his theory accepted that distortion of the facts and somewhat shady experiments (i.e. temperature instruments next to air conditioning units, enclosed patios...etc) only prove that someone is tricking or forcing a theory on supposed stupid people. There are a couple of things convienatly passed over. Volcano: when a volcano erupts the earths temperature can raise up to 1 degree, for several years. How is C02, the main stay of environmental cycles produced to the degree it is distroying things. Since Mr. Hanson works for NASA, he must be aware of the pollution clouds from the Russian copper processing areas (smelling) followed by the pollution from China are gathering over the north pole. Global warming? no. So, why is Mr. Hanson taking the governments of Russia and China to the courts for their transgression. They are not as easy target as big oil, and US court system. he might have to prove something, rather than invoke hysteria and angst concerning a hoax. If Mr. Hanson where to suggest a climate shift he would probably be closer to the true. the problem is we still can't do anything about it.

Ben, have you looked at the

Ben, have you looked at the numbers lately? The world is in a cooling trend. To discover the facts, you can look to UAH, RSS, HadCrut3, or Jim's very own distorted numbers at GISS. All of them, regardless of how the numbers get scrubbed still point to a cooling trend. Aren't writers suppose to research assertions made by their subjects? Anyway, some writers, any writer could do this world a huge favor by fact checking the AGW assertions. We've had twenty years to follow their assumptions regarding climate change. They have been consistently wrong. Please look to the sources. Regards, James

Suyts---You didn't tell me

Suyts---You didn't tell me you were over here too spreading your disinformation! COOLING TREND! WOOT! New challenge for Mr. Suyts: supply here a single peer reviewed (climate journal of any type) paper describing a cooling trend in 2007 2008. An actual cooling trend would be easy to spot, and thousand of people would be rushing to publish. Seriously.

The numbers do not show a

The numbers do not show a cooling trend, this is a myth. When the global temperature starts showing below average trends for a couple decades than I will believe. Winters are shorter and warmer, precipitation patterns are changing, storms are increasing. Locally, every month now is above average. We never break record lows only record highs. I've looked at the NWS climate data and this trend has been going on since atleast 1990.

So, you didn't bother to

So, you didn't bother to look at the numbers I suggested? That's fine, but you should recognize the institutions that I listed are the accepted authorities on the temp anomalies. One of the difficulties in determining temp anomalies is determining what exactly is average. For instance, GIS uses Jan 1951 - Dec 1980 average as their baseline, this happens to coincide with the coolest period in the last century. While I don't have a particular ax to grind about that period, one must take into account that it is the coolest period to choose from. Further, it is arbitrary. Why was it decided that that period was the period to measure from? Is it the optimum temp for the earth? What was the criteria to decide such a thing? Also, you know that local temps really have no indication of global temp. Lastly, when I stated a cooling trend, I didn't state colder than average, I was stating that for the last 17 months the earth has progressively gotten cooler than prior. In fact, it is cooler now than when our friend Jim made his first testimony to Congress. Look it up. Good luck, James

Cooling Trend, HUH? Show us

Cooling Trend, HUH? Show us just one peer reviewed paper showing a global cooling trend. You keep trying on all this "check the temps from GIS yada yada" or "the accepted authorities on the temp anomalies" like you actually understand this stuff. You are just repeating the same cherry picked nonsense they cook up at SkepTechCentral. 17 months? What a joke. Try this quote instead: "The University of East Anglia and the Met Office's Hadley Centre have released preliminary global temperature figures for 2007, which show the top 11 warmest years (going back to 1850) all occurring in the last 13 years." from---http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071213101419.htm---there is the trend, and it is not cooling. Just give up, OK, your distortions cannot survive even a cursory examination, and you are wasting our time.

What he did not say is that

What he did not say is that global temperatures are colder not than when he first made his grab for fame. He is no more a scientist than my dog.

Wow, this Hansen must be

Wow, this Hansen must be clinically insane to make such comments. He should be prosecuted.

Unfortunately for them,

Unfortunately for them, EviroGreg, the people Hansen is opinioning on have left a long paper trail. Interesting times ahead, eh?
