Illegal Drug Harvests Remain High
Global illicit drug sales are estimated between $300 billion and $500 billion each year. This rivals annual drug sales for the pharmaceutical industry, which are $300 billion.
In some countries, the illegal drug trade generates more money than any other single industry. A 1998 estimate found that marijuana was the fourth most lucrative crop in the United States, after corn, soybeans, and hay, and the biggest grossing crop in several states.

In Mexico, many farmers are turning to opium or marijuana because their corn and other crops cannot compete with cheaper imported food.
